What’s it all about?

This programmes introduces you to a broad understanding of caring for the elderly and is suitable for anyone working, volunteering or personally supporting an older person, particularly those that support or have contact with older people who have an increased propensity to falls.

The course is designed for those wishing to gain the knowledge and understanding to either volunteer or work within the healthcare sector with an interest in supporting the elderly. It is also suitable for those of you who may be caring for someone personally and wish to gain the essential knowledge to support their well-being or who have an increased propensity to falls. The course supports progression onto further qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care or education sectors.

Health related qualifications are not a requirement to study this programme

You will be taught using a range of teaching techniques including classroom delivered sessions, interactive workshops and self-study. Most teaching will take place in the classroom, with some opportunities for you to access online learning.

Assessment methods include; formal written tasks; presentations; independent learning; poster presentation; case studies. You will compile a portfolio to demonstrate your learning of subject knowledge and transferable key skills.

English and Math’s are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career.

If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Math’s and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

We have a number of links to industry including relationships with Mind, Parkinson’s Group, NHS, Sunderland Care and Support, Sunderland Home Care Association, Bluebird Care, as well as a number of local charitable organisations to ensure you gain an outstanding learning experience with us and are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in industry.

- Understand the risk factors and causes of falls
- Falls assessment and prevention
- Managing falls.
