What’s it all about?

This course is all about sports coaching and development. Students will learn about various topics that will build up the skills and experience needed to work in this industry and prepare them for their next steps. Students will be developing their skills and behaviours on this course that are necessary to work in the sports industry.

Students will learn about being a sports coach in a variety of settings, and understand the careers available in the sport and active leisure industry.

Students will be developing their ability to communicate in different ways, develop their digital literacy skills, critical thinking skills plus many other transferable skills that will be useful in the sports industry.

Students will need at least 4 GSCE’s at grade 4 or above (including maths or English).

There will be a variety of teaching methods for students. There will be taught lessons within classrooms by industry professionals. There will be practical lessons in the sports hall or using our other practical facilities. There will also be virtual lessons.

Students will be formatively assessed during lessons so the lecturers can check to understand.

Students will be assessed on regular occasions throughout through summative assessment. These summative assessments will vary from planning and delivering coaching sessions, to writing reports.

Students will have opportunities to achieve Pass/Merit/Distinction for each assessment.

It is expected that students will have achieved/working towards achieving at least a grade 4 in English and Maths.

Maths and English will be embedded into lessonsin a variety of ways.

All students will be involved in the Leadership Academy where they will work within the community to offer coaching and development input.

All students will be expected to take part in a meaningful work placement.

This programme will enable students to work with employers and different sport and physical activity providers. There are various employers that the college works with including Martin Nugents Elite Performance Centre, Rise and others.

As sports leaders, it is likely that students will be working with school children as part of their development as leaders and coaches.

This is a full time programme where lessons will be scheduled from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

- Sports Development
- Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity
- Organising Events in Sport

Pearson BTEC

Students will be enhancing their skills as leaders in the Leadership and Volunteering programme.

What’s next?

Students can progress into the sports industry after successfully completing this course, or onto a Higher Education.
